When it comes to search engine optimization, there is literally a never-ending list of things that you can do. Some strategies are more effective than others, but a great number of them also happen to be very time-consuming. The irony is that many people forget to take care of the little things. It's like deciding to go on a road trip, only to forget where you left the keys.

Over on Search Engine Watch, Josh McCoy has compiled a list of eight SEO tips that you can accomplish in fifteen minutes or less. Regardless of whether you have a blog, a company website, or a resource site, you'd be foolish not to go through these eight basic steps.

SEO

You'll still want to pay attention to things like keyword density and inbound deep-links, of course, but these eight simple steps are so basic that they simply should not be ignored.

The tips include such things as remembering to review your robots.txt file to see if you're withholding pages from search engines, reviewing the most frequently linked pages on your site, looking for duplicate title elements in Google Webmaster Tools, requesting anchor text changes from authority sites, and verifying your Google and Bing Local listings.

Also remember that these aren't one time activities! You should follow up periodically to make sure everything is in check. Do you have any simple SEO tips that you'd like to share? What are some of the most common mistakes you've found?

Earlier this year when Google plus was first released there was a ton of hype about the amazing new social media site with cool circles for networking. Well no doubt, Google has made its point, Google Plus is here to stay and Google will become a major player in the social media game.

But what about businesses? Industry and market networking, marketing for companies through social media and more??

Google will release a "business page or profile" in Google Plus later this year.

This should incorporate new content and media areas for listing your companies profile with all products and services. Plus you'll have new spots to build networks of business clients and other connections. It will be important for you to get your business page up as soon as possible. Each niche and industry will fill quickly with new companies, and if you are able to get yours up very quickly a lot of new connections will be made as creators look to connect with others in their industry.

A major part of any successful SEO campaign is incorporating social media sites, you gain backlinks and reputation building that will help improve your rankings over time. Don't forget to constantly update these sources and profiles as you'll see more responses and interactions from the community. Both can boost your authority in your industry helping you rank higher on the specific social media websites as well. Great for helping people find your company and profile over others, so engage your community regularly for best results.

Keep your head up for news on Google Plus business pages and make yours as soon as its released. Start connecting and pushing your business further online, good luck and prepare for the future of social media search.

"A lot of companies do not understand the importance of adding a blog to your corporate website for search engine optimization success."

Google has been focusing on greatly improving their search result quality, and the primary factor has been content. The panda algorithm's main job is to find, locate and devalue all duplicate, scraped, junk, and spun content from major keyword results. But, on the flip side, it places higher weight and worth to those site results that have 100% unique, quality content.

So how can you add a ton of content that is keyword rich, focused and has full relevance to your market, niche and industry??

Blogging.

There are alot of different ways to implement a blog onto your companies website, I prefer using Wordpress installations. They are very clean and you can place them on a sub-folder of your domain.

I.E. http://www.yourcompany.com/blog

Topics to blog about for your companies site:

  • Product usage/help FAQ
  • Industry news and updates
  • Service related tips and info
  • Company functions, events, picnics, etc
  • Regulatory changes and news in your market
  • Government updates that may affect clients

Blogging is good for your search engine marketing efforts, there are no two ways about it. Not only does it allow you to gain more organic traffic but you'll start to improve your trust and authority with Google by giving so much information to their users and search engine results.

You can really pour on the content, helping you gain hundreds of new URL's with major keyword rich information and a ton of possible long-tail keywords as well. Many of these long-tail keywords will be picked up by Google and Bing to give you added search traffic coming from organic rankings that are focused and targeted to your industry. Nothing beats that.

Post-Panda and Inbound Links

There is a lot of conflicting information about link building in the Post-Panda climate of Google's ranking algorithms. The fact is, no one truely knows exactly how Google is evaluating inbound links to any one website. This has always been the case as Google has worked hard to protect their algorithm metrics and the specific changes they constantly make to improve search result quality.

But, we have learned that many 'old school' and previous SEO techniques are no longer successful and can possibly bring harm to your websites ranking ability. This can lead to being sandboxed or just getting all your links devalued or even de-indexed. Basically, you wasted a little or a lot of time getting backlinks that are negative or useless toward your ranking results. To make sure you don't make any of these mistakes lets take a look at some of the "negative" SEO tactics currently.

Poor and Detrimental SEO Practices:

  • Content duplicating, spinning, stealing
  • Link cloaking
  • Keyword spam, keyword stuffing
  • Canonical tags for redirects, stick with 301's and limited use
  • Hidden keywords, img tags, etc
  • Non-relevant backlink building

What does Panda want to see?

  • Quality, unique content
  • Relevant and quality inbound links
  • Participation with your community, forums, blogs, and more
  • Media incorporation: videos, images, etc
  • High PR backlinks from relevant sources

Please make sure to stop and remove any old "black hat" style SEO techniqus that are incorporated on your webpage, these will only harm your potential to rank on the search engines. Especially as the Panda algorithm keeps being pushed through the results, adding, deleting, and altering results for better user quality.

Focus on writing quality content for your site AND for your backlinks. Then you'll be able to distribute this content throughout the web, helping you gain strong contextual linking and anchor text that is integrated with unique content that speaks to your specific market and niche. If you do not have the time to put forth quality efforts, make sure to browse the web and find a quality SEO company.

Offering SEO as a service is extremely competitive and there is always a new Design agency or IT company coming out of the wood works suggesting that they can offer SEO.

The thing that all us SEO professionals know is that they are no where near as experienced as what other SEO companies are and have been doing for years but there are still a few pointers to go by to stay ahead of the game.

Be different
Offer a unique service and do well at it. Be on top of the game and up with new algorithm changes and what is happening in the industry.

Be competitive
Do a good job at the right price and deliver on time. You do not want to guarantee results at a time frame if you can not stick to it.

Be aggressive
Work hard on all your clients, if you are overloaded with work this does not mean you should spend less time on one client and more with another, spread out your efforts evenly even if it means you need to work harder or get a helping hand.

Be assertive
Always stay positive and on the ball, if your clients ask questions through email do not delay responses, keep them happy and trusting in you by answering all the questions they have asked you.

Ask questions
Get to know your clients marketing perspective, what they have done in the past both online and offline and what has or has not worked for them and use this information wisely. To be successful in any SEO or Marketing project you must ask questions before the project and during. If it’s a one way street it will not last.

Prove your experience
Show your clients examples of results you have achieved for keywords and sites you have got to 1st page of the search engines on and testimonials of clients that are genuinely happy with your work.

Reporting
Give your clients monthly reporting and if they require reporting when they ask you should also provide this. It will settle their nerves and give them the information they need to see that you are actually doing the work.
