The battle between search engines and social media websites to dominate the most visited sector of Internet have started long back. The battle now seems to be more strong as Facebook have been the most visited website in US during three days in December. Facebook have overtaken search engine gaint Google and achieved this visitors stastics in US. Will this be a holiday trend or will this become a global trend ?. The days are Christmas day eve, Christmas day and New Years Eve. The information has been published on Hitwise US Twitter account. This trend of facebook trafficcould attract some US advertisers to facebook. The US visits to Twitter have increased 4% in December 2009 as compared to November 2009. This is a strong indication that Social Media websites are emerging as a competitor to Search Engine.

The top searched term in 2009 was "Facebook" as per Hitwise Information. This gives Facebook a competitive edge ahead of the other social media gaints to compete against the search engines. Facebook has moved 10 position as compared to previous year to gain the position of top searched word in 2009.

Jeff Caceres Umm..excuse me? I think you are referring to "threat" not "treat". Of course it's not a threat because they have difference in between. Search engines are very useful for searching lots of information, while social media is only a community of attraction with each other.

Cijo Abraham Mani Alan, Thanks for the comment. I do understand your point and I do agree that social media is a community but social media like Twitter also offers the feature of real time search. You must have seen that most of the job seekers now search on twitter to get more relevant real time search results. If social media websites start to give relevant results then they can surely become a threat to search engine in the near future.

Daniel Lew Just the shear fact that Facebook is already the 2nd most visited site according to Alexa is a big eye opener in itself. I think if they have achieved this already within the short amount of time online and already have 350 million users even sites like Twitter as well could well dominate the internet in the future. The key question is will they set their own search engine? The fact that Social networks is becoming the norm is one thing, but it's more about how effective the information is and how it comes across. The key issue still exists in the lack of effectiveness in search results for social networks.
